Enrollment Application Procedures
Independent Study Enrollment Process
Step 1: Submit an Application
Student and Family must meet with the resident school to complete and sign the application form and IS contract.
Students must remain enrolled at their current school until Independent Study enrollment is confirmed.
Step 2: Application Review
- Applications are reviewed to determine eligibility by Independent Study Office.
- All students with IEP’s must go through their current school site psychologist and Alternative Education-IS Psychologist, Miguel Sanchez, to apply to Independent Study.
- ELD students and General Ed. Students must have a minimum overall ELPAC score of 3. Students with ELPAC
scores below 3 will be considered on a case-by-case basis and will require additional support measures.
Step 3: Orientation
If the application is approved:

The Independent Study office will contact families within 48–72 hours to schedule a required orientation appointment.

Students and parents/guardians must attend orientation before enrollment is finalized.
Step 4: Program Expectations
Students in Independent Study must:

Attend weekly in-person meetings with their teacher.

Complete coursework regularly and maintain progress (about 1 credit every 3–4 weeks).

Take APEX tests in person during weekly meetings or tutoring.

Remain in the program through the end of the semester.
Students who do not demonstrate adequate progress within 8 weeks may be referred to another program or returned to their home school.
Final Enrollment
Students will not be withdrawn from their current school until Independent Study confirms enrollment.
- After orientation is held, Parent/Guardian must disenroll student from resident school (return books, keep electronic device)
- After disenrollment, IS Teacher will contact family to meet for 1:1 meeting and begin course work
